L'ectopie testiculaire

Testicular ectopy

Testicular ectopy (cryptorchidism or monorchidism) is when a mature animal only has one or no testicle down in the scrotal bag. The testicles are retained, either inside the abdomen, either at the inguinal level (they can be felt by an expert palpation).

During fetal development, testicle are located inside the abdomen, then they migrate inside the scrotal sac. They can be felt at about 70 days of age on dogs. But at this stage, they can sometimes go back into the abdomen.

This abnormality is hereditary. It won't affect the animal's reproductive capacities (unless both testicles are retained, in this case they undergo an excessive temperature which prevents them from functionning the right way : the animal will be sterile). However, hormons will be produced, therefore the dog will have a normal male behavior.

Ectopic testicles often develop cancer. As they are inside the abdomen, they cannot be palpated : therefor the diagnosis is often made too late, when it has become so big that it triggers compression symptoms. And if the tumor is malignant, this can be life-threatening to the dog.

Another risk is torsion of the abdominal testicle. It triggers an acute abdominal pain, also life-threatening for the dog if surgery occurs too late

Traitement

An attempt to make the retained testicle migrate into the external scrotal sac is possible, with an hormonal treatment, as long as the dog is not mature. In adult dogs, it is strongly advised to remove surgically the abnormal testicles. Often, a complete castration is performed, for the dog not to perpetuate the condition.

Testicular ectopy is rhedibitory in France and dogs suffering from this conditions are excluded from shows.
